This is a legacy Mathalicious lesson, and it will be retired June 1, 2022. You have access until your legacy subscription expires, but new users can not access it (even with this link).

We'd be happy to suggest a great Citizen Math lesson to replace it.

Very rich lesson with multi entry points. I used the freezing temperatures we have right now in Ontario in the preview asking the students if there is any place in the world they would like to be, given the freezing temperatures we are enduring, where would that place be? Students didn't hesitate one second to share, since it was all about them. It was a great hook to get them explore the area of the continent they would like to visit. We had deep conversations regarding the difference between the two maps. What was amazing during the preview students mentioned that they trust the map they have in the classroom, just because it is in the school. After watching the clip, they started to question the map they have in the class. Students had to work with big number to do multiplication and division and that was great practice for them. A lot of misconceptions were revealed throughout the exercise. I will share the rest of the comments after I teach the lesson this afternoon to another grade 7 class.

I work at a continuation high school so I augmented the student handout with some structure for recording the area of specific regions. I plan to do this again and the following changes are what I want to try: 1. I will divide up both maps (Mercator and Peters) giving each group a section of the maps. It is a lot of work to get the area in square kilometers and the students would struggle if they had to take on both a different times. 2. show the first clip before you calculate the areas and discuss how information disseminated on social media should be questioned. 3. Do the ratios for both maps. 4. Show first clip again and then the final clip. I hope it goes a little better next time.
