How has the temperature changed over time? Students compare current temperatures to historical averages, and add and subtract positive and negative numbers to explore how the climate has changed in various cities around the world.

Students will

  • Calculate the range between a high and low temperature, including when the low temperature is negative
  • Analyze a graph of temperature changes to predict how the climate has changed in a given city
  • Add positive and negative numbers, and discuss what the signs mean in the context of climate
  • Given temperature data for twelve months, determine average temperature change for 2014

Before you begin

Students should know how to calculate an average value from a set of values. Though students add and subtract positive and negative numbers, it is not necessary that they know how to perform these operations prior to this lesson. In fact, the familiar context could serve as an effective introduction.
