This is a legacy Mathalicious lesson, and it will be retired June 1, 2022. You have access until your legacy subscription expires, but new users can not access it (even with this link).

We'd be happy to suggest a great Citizen Math lesson to replace it.

Since it's the week before Thanksgiving, we extended this lesson to see how long it would take to burn the calories in a typical Thanksgiving meal. We researched the average weight of a 6th grader, as well as the calories in the average Thanksgiving meal, and applied those numbers to the different exercises listed in the lesson.

Love this extension, Jennifer! What a timely addition...that might also make for a great dinner table convo with the fam!

I LOVE this project for teaching unit rates & conversions for 6th graders! I was able to create an entire project-based learning unit using what you had and adding an entry document, etc. with it. The best part is all students were able to demonstrate proficiency with their standards after learning the concepts through this PBL!

I think it may have been beneficial to specify that the rates which are stated as cal/lb are really cal/lb/min. By the third period of teaching this lesson, I added that to help them see how the results of the first table were still rates.
